FinderMinder
Download
v1.3.1
Mac OS X 10.6 or later

FinderMinder allows you to specify where (position) and what size you want newly opened Finder windows to appear. The default Finder behavior is to remember the last position and size for every window, but this can be frustrating if you already know where you want every window to appear (for example, centered at 800x600). FinderMinder must be running for window reposition and resize to take place.

FinderMinder must continue running in the background for window reposition and resize to take place, so click the "Hide" button to dismiss the preferences and keep FinderMinder running. Simply re-launch FinderMinder to access the preferences again or to quit the app.

PixelPeeper
Download
v1.0.1
Mac OS X 10.6 or later

PixelPeeper allows you to watch a pixel on your screen and execute an AppleScript when it sees that pixel change.

This can be used to alert you when a long operation is complete. For example, you can watch a pixel within the progress bar/window when performing a software update or installation, downloading or copying large files, or backing up your system. There are literally hundreds of other uses – please let us know how you put PixelPeeper to work watching your desktop.

PowerBlock
Download
v1.2.1
Mac OS X 10.5—10.8

PowerBlock intercepts and ignores presses of the power button and optionally runs an AppleScript. This is handy on the MacBook Air where the power button is now a key on the keyboard and can be accidentally pressed.

By running an AppleScript when the power button is pressed, you can setup your system to immediately shutdown, restart, sleep, or eject a DVD when the power button is pressed. This is great for headless servers.

Known Limitations: PowerBlock is NOT compatible with OS X 10.9 Mavericks due to changes in the power system. PowerBlock does NOT prevent a hard shutdown if you hold the power button for more than 4 seconds. Not compatible with Macmini1,1

ShadowSweeper
Download
v1.1
Mac OS X 10.5—10.10

ShadowSweeper turns shadows for windows and menus off or on, bringing a simple, clean, flat look to your screen. Just launch ShadowSweeper to disable shadows, and launch again to bring them back. ShadowSweeper is great when placing windows side by side seamlessly, with no shadow overlap.

Known Limitations:

  • ShadowSweeper is NOT compatible with OS X 10.11 El Capitan with no fix known at this time.
  • The shadow under the menu bar is still present.

ShortcutDetective
Download
v1.0
Mac OS X 10.6 or later

ShortcutDetective detects which app receives a keyboard shortcut (hotkey). This is useful because sometimes you aren't able to register a shortcut in an app like SizeUp and want to know why.

If you're looking for more control, check out ShortStop which can block all global hotkeys.

Known Limitations: Not all hotkeys can be detected.

Winfo
Download
v1.0
Mac OS X 10.7 or later

Winfo shows info about the window under the cursor. Hold the Command ⌘ key to freeze the display, then click on a label to copy to the clipboard.

Winfo is useful for finding the app responsible for a window or menu bar icon. You can also use the window id to take screenshots using screencapture via the command line.

Note: Temporary app icon.

Known Limitations: Winfo isn't able to "see" windows that are set to ignore mouse events, such as the overlay windows shown when changing the system volume using the media keys.
